Fourth Generation

21. John4 Fackler (Abraham3, Hans George2, Abraham1) was born 14 Mar 1812 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and died 20 Jun 1892 in Tolono Twp, Champaign Co., Illinois. He married Elizabeth Crall. She was born 28 Feb 1816 in Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania, and died 03 Aug 1898 in Tolono Twp, Champaign Co., Illinois.

Child of John Fackler and Elizabeth Crall is:

    + 98 i. John J.5 Fackler, born 30 Oct 1839 in Ohio; died 10 Jan 1916 in Urbana, Illinois.

36. Valentine4 Fackler (Johann George3, Johann Wendel2, Abraham1) was born 1789 in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and died 29 Apr 1861 in Ely, Linn County, Iowa. He married Elizabeth H. Miller Aft. Aug 1822 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, daughter of David Miller and Magdelena Maugans. She was born 1793 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, and died Apr 1865 in Big Grove, Johnson County, Iowa.

Notes for Valentine Fackler:
Valentine was the first or second child of (Johann) George Fackler and Maria Miller. Valentine Fackler's father, (Johann/John) George Fackler moved to Ohio in 1817 with six children leaving a married daughter Eva behind in Pennsylvania. This George Fackler settled in Newton Twp, Miami county, Ohio in 1817.

In 1819 George married a second time to Mary (Magdalena) Nisonger. He died in August 1820. His will dated 7 August 1820 left the "plantation" to his wife for as long as she remained unmarried and mother to his seven children.

In 1823, George's daughter, Eva, and her husband, Abraham Eby, claimed their portion. Her husband signed for the cash settlement of $100.00. His second wife, Mary died "at an advanced age" in 1830. The family farm was then left to the six remaining children in Ohio and one in PA.

The Miami County Ohio Deeds and Wills Records show that on 17 August 1830 Valentine Fackler (and wife, Elizabeth) conveyed his interest (1/7th) in his father George Fackler's farm in Newton Twp, Miami county to his brother Abraham Fackler for the sum of $100.00.

The two remaining brothers, George and Joseph, and sister Mary (Martha) and husband Jacob Rench, also conveyed their interests in the family homestead to either Samuel or Abraham for $100.00 each. Samuel and Abraham then worked the farm for many years until they retired.

Valentine is not mentioned in George's second wife's (Mary Nisonger) Will of 6 October 1830. This is because Valentine had released all claim to the family's "plantation" and he and his family had already moved from Miami County, first to Preble and Montgomery Counties in Ohio. After that they went to Indiana and finally in 1837 to an area known as Fackler's Grove in Johnson County, Iowa where he was buried.

42. Joseph4 Fackler (Johann George3, Johann Wendel2, Abraham1) was born 07 Jan 1810 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, and died Aft. 1880 in Covington, Miami County, Ohio. He married Elizabeth Sands 28 Jun 1829 in Newton Twp., Miami County, Ohio, daughter of John Sands and unknown. She was born Abt. 1806 in Pennsylvania, and died Aft. 1880 in Covington, Miami County, Ohio.

Notes for Joseph Fackler:
All data on the Joseph Fackler lineage comes from Harry C. Fockler, Jr. He states that Joseph Fockler was born in Pennsylvania in 1808, 09 or 1810. This variance is based on the ages shown on the U.S. Census Schedules, 1860, 1870, 1880. He was probably born in Huntingdon, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, where his parents, George Fackler and Mary (Miller) Fackler, were living at the time.

Analysis from some census records gives certainty that the male under five was Sanford Samuel, born October 1837. The female under five may have been Amanda, but subsequent censuses show that Amanda was born in 1842 or 1844, so this female child may not have survived. The next older female child may be Rachel, shown in the 1850 census record below, who was born about 1832. She would have been Sanford's older sister. It is assumed that the Rachael (sic) Fockler who married John L. Wright is this older sister. The female shown to be 15 and under 20 could not have been a child of Joseph and Elizabeth since she was born before they were married. She may have been a niece or hired help.

There is no census record for Joseph Fockler in the 1850 Ohio Census. However another record shows Sanford Falkler (sic), 14, living with the family of J. L. Wright. He may have been apprenticed to him to learn shoemaking, a practice not uncommon for boys of his age in the nineteenth century. Lacking an entry for Joseph Fockler in the 1850 Census of Ohio makes it difficult to determine the status of other members of his family for this period. The 1870 census indicated his occupation to be retired greengrocer.

Since the 1890 Census of the United States was destroyed by fire, no additional census data on Joseph and Elizabeth has been found. They do not appear in the 1900 census, so it is assumed that they died after 1880 and before 1900. A search of cemetery records, old newspapers and Miami County Court records has so far drawn a blank.

Harry C. Fockler, Jr. also noted that he remembered his grandmother, Harriett G. Hathaway Fockler, claiming that Franklin Marion Fockler was part Indian. He had a very dark complexion and had coal black hair and eyes up to day he died at 72 years.

Notes for Elizabeth Sands:
Joseph Fockler and Elizabeth his wife are shown as the "true and lawful owners" and they "relinquish all their right and claim of dower in and to the said premises".

Elizabeth was examined by a Justice of the Peace to make sure that she wanted to sell. This property was directly north of the George Fackler property and was probably either her dowry or her inheritance on the death of her father, John Sands.

There are some Focklers descended from Joseph and Elizabeth who claim that in their oral tradition, Elizabeth Sands was part Native-American, but are uncertain which tribe. She was born in Pennsylvania.

Children of Joseph Fackler and Elizabeth Sands are:

    + 140 i. Rachel5 Fockler, born Abt. 1832.

Notes for Wendel Fockler:
Wendel Fockler was the fifth son of Abraham Fackler (note the spelling change from Fackler to Fockler) and Barbara Hough. Abraham Fackler was the second son of Johann Wendel Fackler who emigrated to this country November 1, 1763. This Wendel was a grandson of Johann Wendel. He was married three times and sired twenty-three children.

He was born in Pennsylvania and later moved to Ohio with his first wife, Elizabeth Fox. The first two children were born in Ohio. From there the family became one of the first settlers of Wisconsin. The town of Magnolia was about fifteen miles west of Janesville, Wisconsin and was established in 1840. Plymouth was first settled in 1841 and Wendel was overseer of roads for District #3. The remaining three children were born in Rock County, Wisconsin. They were married for seventeen years when she died in 1849.

According to research by Harry C. Fockler, Jr. his second wife was Leutitia Koplin. Wendel married her in 1850. There are no children of record to this marriage. Wendel and Leutitia were only married for 16 months and she may have died in childbirth or the complications thereof.

He later married Phebe Esther Reed, a descendant of Wm. Reade of Weymouth, Massachusetts. She and Wendel were married in 1853 in Rock County, Wisconsin where their first four children were born. The fifth, Andrew W., was born in Rockland, La Crosse County, Wisconsin. All of the remaining children were born in Ray County, Missouri.

Phebe was seventeen years younger than Wendel and gave birth to seventeen children. There were four sets of twins. However, only ten of these children survived to adulthood. Phebe died in 1897 in St. John, Whitman Co., Washington at age 69. Wendel died in 1901 in Yakima, Yakima Co., Washington at the age of 90. Today, many of his descendants can be found in South Dakota, Missouri and Washington states.

Notes for Leutitia Koplin:
Wendel and Leutitia were only married for sixteen months as she may have died in childbirth or the complications thereof.

Notes for Phebe Esther Reed:
Phebe Esther Reed is a descendant of William Reade of Weymouth, Massachusetts and the third wife of Wendel Fockler. She was seventeen years younger than Wendel and gave birth to four sets of twins. Only one of these eight children, Linda Isabella, survived to adulthood. Of the other eleven children delivered of Phebe, nine lived to maturity. It has been said she had eighteen children total with four sets being twins.
